چکیده

A leucite-reinforced glass ceramic material (IPS-Empress) was developed for clinical use in Zurich. A prospective clinical study of these laboratory-made all-ceramic crowns revealed encouraging result with an estimated 2-year survival rate of 95%. The aim of the present study was to determine the clinical behavior during a longer period of observation with respect to a possible fatigue fracture phenomenon reported for ceramic systems. Crowns were cemented by applying the adhesive technique. The inner crown surface was etched with hydrofluoric acid and silanized. Dentin adhesives and composite cements were utilized. The glass ceramic crowns were evaluated with mirror, probe and apical radiographs using modified US Public Health Service criteria. Crowns recorded as having neither Cnor D-criteria were defined as successful. Kaplan-Meier estimates were calculated with the lower interval of confidence at the 95% level. The patient’s drop out rate of 16.9% was relatively low. 142 crowns placed in 59 patients could be evaluated with a mean observation time (± std. dev.) of 5.1 (± 1.5) years. Of the 142 restorations, 14 were judged as failures due to fractures. This resulted in a failure rate of 9.9%. Failures were observed between 1 month and 5.5 years after cementation. The estimated 6-year survival rate for this study group (including the early group) was 89.2%. The clinical behavior of this glass ceramic crown system is judged as satisfactory after six years in function.

Influence of cementation and cement type on the fracture load testing methodology of anterior crowns made of different materials.

To evaluate the influence of cementation on fracture load of anterior crowns made of CAD/CAM-resin-blocks (ART), leucite-reinforced glass-ceramics (LRG), lithium disilicate ceramics (LIT), veneered zirconia (ZRO) and veneered alloy (DEG). Each crown group (n=15/subgroup) was cemented on the metal abutment as follows: i. using glass ionomer, ii. using self-adhesive resin cement, and iii. not cem...

Properties and Clinical Application of Three Types of Dental Glass-Ceramics and Ceramics for CAD-CAM Technologies

The main properties (mechanical, thermal and chemical) and clinical application for dental restoration are demonstrated for three types of glass-ceramics and sintered polycrystalline ceramic produced by Ivoclar Vivadent AG. Two types of glass-ceramics are derived from the leucite-type and the lithium disilicate-type. The third type of dental materials represents a ZrO2 ceramic. CAD/CAM technolo...

Six-Year Clinical Results of Leucite-Reinforced Glass Ceramic Inlays and Onlays

A leucite-reinforced glass ceramic material (IPS-Empress) which had shown for indirectly fabricated inlays and onlays an encouraging 2-year survival rate of 97.5% in a prospective clinical trial was introduced for clinical use at the University of Zürich. The aim of the present study was to assess the clinical behavior of IPS-Empress inlays and onlays with respect to possible fatigue phenomena ...

Performance of universal adhesives on bonding to leucite-reinforced ceramic

BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the microshear bond strength of universal bonding adhesives to leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic. METHODS Leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic blocks were polished and etched with 9.5% hydrofluoric acid for 1 min. The specimens were assigned to one of four groups based on their surface conditioning (n = 16): 1) NC: negative control with no further treatme...
